Book Thesis/Theme and Assessment
The Thrawn Trilogy takes place about five years after the battle of Endor, the destruction of the second Death Star and the fall of the Emperor, Darth Vader, and the Galactic Empire. The New Republic is well established by the Rebellion and its leaders, and is doing its best to maintain peace and order in the galaxy. At this point in time, there were many disputes among council members regarding smuggler trouble within the galaxy and the remaining remnants of the Galactic Empire, all while the New Republic scatters mercenaries and soldiers to locate and wipe out the rest of the former imperials. Another issue in the story is the New Republic building and strengthening the new senate on the capital planet of Coruscant, to ensure that there is no corruption among senators and other Republic leaders, the main catalyst which contributed to the Fall of the Old Republic. The establishment of the New Republic government is very disheartening and irritating to Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn, a former leader of the once Empire. Other new characters emerge such as an old, senile Jedi named C'Baoth who aligns himself with Thrawn and a strong, beautiful woman with an attitude named Mara Jade, a former assistant to the Emperor.
The theme of the story is based around the new establishment and continuation of the New Republic government structure and maintaining peace in the galaxy against the dark side of the force, represented
by C'Baoth and Admiral Thrawn. This theme is constant throughout all Star Wars movies and stories, with the main themes being good vs. evil, Jedi vs. Sith, Rebels vs. Imperials, Humans vs. Machines, and how the light side will always prevail when trusting in the force. The author successfully conveys this theme throughout the story all while pertaining to the Star Wars authenticity which is very sensitive and in-depth. The author successfully uses foreshadowing and irony throughout the story which was also used in the previous movies, video games, and stories. One example is that no one is safe on the Dark Side, and how someone can be betrayed unknowingly at anothers convenience, there is no mercy and this story touches base on this key characteristic.
Overall the theme in all aspects, whether it is: story authenticity, character traits, galaxy settings, story line deliverables, story engagement and reading simplicity was very effective and integrated very well by Timothy Zahn.
In Star Wars: A New Hope, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi describes the force as: “The Force is an energy field, it surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”
